Hello! I know it's been a long time since I blogged. Balancing all the roles of a school counselor can be quite challenging!
Second graders just completed their bullying unit. They know that bullying is:
On purpose to hurt
Happens over and over
They also understand that:
Bullying= Danger
Second graders role played telling an adult if they are being bullied or, if they know someone else who is being bullied They understand how hurtful bullying can be!
We also read two really great stories:
Froggy Tames a Bully
The Bully Blockers Club
I especially like the Bully Blockers Club because it demonstrates kids bonding together to stop bullying. Although we don't introduce the concept of "imbalance of power" in second grade, this book does a great job at showing how kids can take the power away from a bully by sticking together.
Here are some of their amazing anti-bullying posters! I posted some of them on our bulletin board. We have some really fabulous artists at DBS!

Second Grade Conflict
Second grader's have begun learning how to manage conflicts. Conflicts happen all the time in second grade!
Our first lesson on conflict second graders learned that:
Conflict= a disagreement.
A trick question- Is conflict good or bad?
What makes conflict good or bad are the choices that you make.
What it means if a conflict escalates, and what it means if it de-escalates.
Second graders filled out a worksheet about a conflict that they had with a friend, and how they resolved it.
Here are some examples:
My friend and I had a conflict because "we were arguing over who gets the dominos."
We resolved our conflict by "splitting them in half."
My friend and I had a conflict because "we were playing the opposite game as the other."
We resolved our conflict by " just playing something that we wanted to play together."
My friend and I had a conflict because "my friend wouldn't let me play with her."
We resolved our conflict "by talking it out."
My friend and I had a conflict because "we were fighting over toys."
We resolved our conflict by "playing something else."

Second Grade Uncomfortable Feelings
Last week I introduced uncomfortable feelings to second graders. They practiced making faces for feeling disappointed, frustrated, scared, upset, and worried. They came up with scenarios of when they might feel this way. Here are some of their drawings of uncomfortable feelings:

Social Thinking
This week second graders started a unit on social thinking. For the next four weeks they will be learning about expected and unexpected behaviors in the classroom.
They have learned that:
Expected Behaviors = Good Thoughts and Good Feelings
Unexpected Behaviors= Uncomfortable Thoughts and Uncomfortable Feelings
Expected behaviors in the classroom:
Raising your hand
Walking
Sharing
Listening
Unexpected behaviors in the classroom:
Yelling
Calling out
Punching
Running
Second graders also learned that they develop good thoughts about students who use expected behaviors and, uncomfortable thoughts around students who use unexpected behaviors. They were given an example of a behavior on the smart board and asked to chose a thought they would have about it.

For example:
Someone helps you pick up- “I like being in class with this kid.”
Someone is not doing their work- “I don’t like being in class with this kid.”

Next week we will learn how to replace unexpected behaviors with expected behavior.
